Early Life and Football Development

Cole Stockton began developing his football career through the youth system at Tranmere Rovers. His early connection with the club provided the foundation for his progression into senior football, eventually giving him opportunities to play competitively at a young age.

A difficult experience also formed an important part of his early life. At the age of 13, Stockton suffered septicaemia while on trial with Tranmere. During his recovery, his father, Stephen, died from liver disease. This was a significant personal event during Stockton’s childhood and later became part of the story surrounding his determination as a footballer.

Career Start With Tranmere Rovers

Stockton moved from youth football into the senior game with Tranmere Rovers. His early professional development included a loan spell at Vauxhall Motors, where he gained valuable experience away from his parent club.

The early stages of his career were not defined by instant success. Instead, Stockton had to build his experience through different teams and competitions. This gradual progression became a recurring theme throughout his career as an English footballer.

Morecambe and the Biggest Career Breakthrough

Morecambe became the club most strongly associated with Stockton’s rise as a goalscorer. After returning permanently in 2019, he steadily increased his contribution before producing an exceptional campaign in League One.

During the 2020–21 season, Morecambe won promotion to League One through the play-offs. Stockton was part of the squad during this important achievement, which gave the club a place in the third tier of English football.

The following season was even more significant for Stockton personally.

The Outstanding 2021–22 Season

The 2021–22 campaign was the defining season of Cole Stockton’s professional career. Playing 44 league matches for Morecambe, he scored 23 League One goals and added three assists according to FBref. He scored 26 goals across all competitions according to the same statistical record.

His goalscoring form brought individual recognition almost immediately. Stockton won the League One Player of the Month award for August 2021 after scoring four goals in five matches. He then won the award again for September after scoring five goals during the month.

His performances were not limited to conventional finishes. A long-range goal against AFC Wimbledon became another highlight of his remarkable start to the season, earning him a Goal of the Month award.

The season also brought recognition from his fellow professionals. Stockton was selected in the PFA League One Team of the Year alongside several of the division’s leading players. The PFA described him as Morecambe’s third-highest scorer in the division that season.

Career Statistics

Stockton’s career statistics show a player who accumulated experience across numerous clubs before reaching his most productive period.

FBref records 435 league appearances and 103 league goals across 16 seasons, 10 clubs and four leagues in its current database. His statistics include 23 league goals for Morecambe in 2021–22, 11 in 2022–23, seven for Barrow in 2023–24, 15 for Salford City in 2024–25, and three for Salford City in 2025–26.

His 2026–27 record with Accrington Stanley currently shows seven League Two appearances in the latest available statistics. These figures can change as the season continues.

Playing Style

Stockton has primarily operated as a centre-forward. His physical presence and ability to play as a traditional forward have been important features of his game.

His 2021–22 statistics also demonstrate his willingness to shoot regularly. For Morecambe that season, he registered 149 shots and 61 shots on target in League One, scoring 23 goals.

The statistics underline why his finishing became such an important part of Morecambe’s attacking approach during that campaign.

Awards and Achievements

Major Individual Recognition

Stockton’s most notable individual achievements include his selection for the 2021–22 PFA League One Team of the Year.

He also won the League One Player of the Month award for August 2021 and September 2021. During the same period, he received Goal of the Month recognition for goals against Ipswich Town and AFC Wimbledon.

Club Achievement

One of his major team achievements came with Morecambe in 2020–21, when the club won the League Two play-off final and earned promotion to League One.

This achievement was particularly important because it marked Morecambe’s promotion to the third tier, giving Stockton the opportunity to compete regularly at League One level.

Cole Stockton as an English Footballer

Cole Stockton’s career represents a different route to professional success. Rather than progressing directly to one of England’s biggest clubs, he developed through lower-league and Football League football.

That journey gave him experience at numerous clubs and different levels. His career demonstrates how an English footballer can develop gradually through persistence, opportunities, loans, and consistent performances.

His Morecambe years were particularly important because they transformed him from an experienced lower-league forward into a recognised League One goalscorer.

Career After Morecambe

After leaving Morecambe following the 2022–23 season, Stockton joined Burton Albion. He subsequently spent time with Barrow, where he scored seven league goals during the 2023–24 campaign.

His move to Salford City provided another opportunity to continue his career in the English Football League. During the 2024–25 season, he scored 15 league goals for Salford, showing that he could still make a substantial attacking contribution.

The following season produced fewer goals, with three league goals recorded in the current statistical database. In 2026, current statistics list him with Accrington Stanley.

Career Strengths and Challenges

Stockton’s strongest career period came when his finishing ability translated into consistent League One goals. His 23-goal league campaign remains the clearest statistical high point of his career.

The less successful periods are also part of his professional journey. His career included several moves between clubs and loan spells, demonstrating that professional football can involve repeated adjustments rather than a single continuous path.

His career therefore contains both positive and challenging chapters. The positive side is clear in his Morecambe achievements, while the difficult side is reflected in the frequent moves required before and after his breakthrough.

Personal Life and Family Background

Publicly documented information about Stockton’s private life is limited. The most clearly reported family detail concerns his father, Stephen, whose death from liver disease occurred while Stockton was recovering from septicaemia as a teenager.

Beyond this documented information, reliable public sources do not provide enough verified details about his mother, siblings, grandparents, relationships, children, or private family life. Those details should not be presented as facts without reliable evidence.

Current Career

Current football statistics list Stockton as an Accrington Stanley player during the 2026–27 League Two season. The available record shows seven league appearances at the latest statistical update.

Because the season is ongoing, his appearance and goalscoring figures can change. His current chapter continues a professional career that has already included more than a decade of senior football.

Conclusion

Cole Stockton has built a distinctive career through perseverance, movement between clubs, and an ability to produce important goals at key stages. His journey from the Tranmere Rovers youth system to senior football eventually led to his greatest individual success with Morecambe.

The 2021–22 season remains the standout chapter. Twenty-three League One goals, consecutive monthly awards, memorable finishes, and selection in the PFA League One Team of the Year established Stockton as one of the division’s notable forwards that season. His later spells with Burton Albion, Barrow and Salford City continued his long career in the English Football League, while current records place him with Accrington Stanley.
